Standing over 3,000 meters, Mt. Ontake is Japan's second-highest volcano. It has long been revered as sacred. In the 18th century, many pilgrims set off for its peak from Kiso-Fukushima, a major post town at the foot of the mountain. Their path came to be known as the Ontake Kodo Trail.
